Solar Security Lights

Solar Security Lights are the ideal protection for your home and property. They will welcome your friends and discourage intruders.

They are also known as solar motion detector lights. The passive infrared motion detector is the heart of the system and is designed to sense heat generated by humans and animals. This component monitors the surrounding area and triggers the light when any movement is detected. On most models, the sensitivity and angle of the sensor can be adjusted. It is important to fine-tune it; you don't want the light to set-off every time a cat or a dog penetrates the detection zone.

In general, the lighting is produced by a 6v
halogen bulb, but on some recent models LED's(Light Emitting Diodes) start to appear on the market. On some advanced products, in addition to lighting, an alarm will sound when activity is sensed.

Solar Security Lights are easy to set-up. No cabling work and no electricity are necessary; all you have to do is to decide on the site you need to protect and fix it. When installing your solar security light, as with all solar products, make sure the solar panel is exposed to sunlight; this will guarantee that the battery is correctly charging. Most solar security lights come with a separable solar panel that you can attach to a convenient and sunny place.

An important thing to remember when installing a solar security light is to fasten it sufficiently high, to avoid any tampering by eventual intruders.

Paint in Spain – Types of paint

I imagine that many people including myself only think about the planned or suggested colour for any decorating project when it is getting near the time that they actually wish to purchase paint. However it is just as important to decide which type of paint should be used and for which surface etc and the final finish that is required needs to be carefully considered.

I will attempt to set out some of the various options that are available and usually work well in most average settings.

Various Types of Paint:

The terms used in paint Latex and oil base are often used rather loosely. When a painter specifies a gallon of a certain brand of latex, he may in reality often be getting non-latex or an artificial-latex water based paint. The explanation here is that there are continuously new products being developed using synthetic materials that perform more or less identical to latex. Naturally many of these paints still carry "latex" on their label. Where a paint or stain product is referred to "acrylic" or "water based", it usually has the same properties similar as that of latex paint, even if it does not include the term latex pain on the can. Similarly when you ask for an oil-based paint you may get the similar alkyd. In this article I have used the term "latex" to also include other similar water-based paints, and the term "oil-base" to include alkyd.

Effects of varying degrees of Gloss High gloss, semi gloss, eggshell, satin, low sheen and flat, these are all very general terms, and it can often be noticed that as one moves from one brand of paint to another or perhaps from one type of paint to another the gloss factor will change. A very good example of this is that with many paint companies you will find that their interior oil based semi gloss appears to be quite a lot glossier than their interior latex semi gloss. In addition a satin oil finish from one company may look to have the same shine factor as perhaps semi gloss oil from another paint manufacturer. Obviously it is important to choose the correct gloss and in many ways this is just as important as selecting the right choice of colour.

A shining surface sends out a much different effect than a non-shinny surface and so the degree of gloss will most certainly influence the final outcome of the entire project.

Bug Detector - Are You being Bugged Watched or Recorded?

When most of us think of a Bug Detector we think of the process involved in finding those creepy crawling creatures that may live on our kitchen floor, under the bed or out on the front porch.
We all know that these creeping creatures can be a nuisance and may cause our skin to crawl when thinking about them however this is not the Bugs or Bug Detector that is referred to here.
The Bug Detector referred to here is a device used to locate hidden cameras, audio bugs, listening devices and real time GPS tracking devices that may be invading your personal privacy.
Are you bugged? Several low cost devices now exist on the market today that make it easier than ever for someone to watch, listen and record your private conversations. Hidden Cameras and Audio Bugs can be purchased very easily on the Internet or even at your local toy store.
You may have to ask yourself why someone would be interested in placing a bug or a hidden camera in your home or place of business. There are several situations or reasons that we may all consider when the possibility of someone bugging us is high.
For example this may include situations such as: You may be pending or going through a divorce. You may be going through a long drawn out custody battle. You are engaged in long term projects that you want to keep secret. Your company may be offering competitive technology or may be going public. You may have private investigators watching you. You may have a jealous boyfriend or you simply may be very attractive and worried about your perverted neighbor getting out of hand next door.
Hidden cameras and bugs are generally very small and can be hidden and located very easily just about anywhere. They include wired and wireless cameras, micro audio bugs and can be as common and simple as your cell phone.
Hidden Cameras can be purchased and placed just about anywhere. They can be installed in your light switch, VCR, lamp or mirror. FM audio bugs are very small and can be purchased and placed easily. They are designed to transmit on a FM signal that can be heard by tuning in on a FM radio while parked across the street.
Several cell phones have the option to be called without hearing the ringer and automatically picked up. The user on the other end can then hear everything that the cell phone can hear when it is live and in use. A disgruntled employee could simply leave his cell phone live during an important meeting transmitting confidential information to your competitors on the other end.
Most hidden cameras and bugs use wireless technology to transmit the audio and or video to a receiver where the signal can then be viewed and recorded. The power of that signal will depend on how far it is transmitting to the receiver. Some devices may be transmitted to the room next door and others may be transmitted up to 3 to 5 miles away.
These frequencies obviously can not be seen with the naked eye but can be detected by using a Bug Detector. A RF bug detector is simply a device used to detect frequencies that are being transmitted by a hidden wireless camera, GPS tracking device, live cell phone or audio bug. There are several bug detectors out on the market and vary in price and quality.
The bug detector is a receiving device and if it is to sensitive it may give you a false reading around electro magnetic interference. If it is not sensitive enough it may not detect low power transmitters easily. Some bug detectors have a sensitivity adjustment on them to allow you to eliminate unwanted interference and allow you to close in and find the source of your target signal. You will also want the bug detector to have a wide range of detection around 0 ~ 6 GHz.
You will want to find a bug detector that is reasonably priced and of good quality for your needs. If you travel a lot there are many key chain detectors available that work very well and are easy and simple to use. For example you may just want to do a quick scan before entering the dressing room or tanning salon. If you have serious security concerns you may want to hire a professional to perform a complete bug sweep on your property. If you feel that you may need protection from hidden cameras, audio bugs or GPS tracking devices and would like to learn more about obtaining a Bug Detector you can visit http://MicroVideoX.com for more information on Counter Surveillance .

How to use an Intercom System as a Complete Home Security Solution

The modern intercom system can be more than an effective way to communicate with people throughout your home. There are many systems on the market that offer additional features that provide both convenience and security. More and more people are looking at ways of improving their home security and for good reason, as the population increases so does the crime rate which is a fact of life that we cannot afford to ignore.

When combined with an entry video camera and monitor visitors can be screened before you open the door and you can speak to them from the control station inside your home before deciding whether or not to let them in. Aside from the security this offers you, the convenience of not having to leave what you are doing to answer the door, particularly if you work from a home office or have trouble getting around makes the investment in an Intercom System worthwhile.

Many other features can also be incorporated into an intercom system that can transform it into a complete home alarm system. Window sensors, glass breakage sensors, motion sensors, smoke alarms and alarm sirens can all be configured to operate through the intercom control station. The window sensors can be set so that you can have the windows partially open for ventilation but if the window is forced open any further the contacts separate and the alarm is triggered.

For the ultimate in home security add back to base monitoring for your system and if the alarm is triggered a security patrol, police or fire service will be sent to your address to investigate. For home owners with pets there are motion detectors which use passive infared technology which helps to prevent false alarms from roaming pets. The infared beam can be set high enough to allow pets to move around but the beam will still be interrupted by an intruder moving around.

As a basic set up an intercom offers efficient communication between people in your home, but if home security is what you are after look for a system that can accommodate additional features and functions. Most of these systems can be added to as your budget allows and some of the additional components can be bought in a wireless configuration making installation a breeze. If you are having a home built and are thinking that an intercom system would be a good inclusion now is the time to make your decision as installation is a lot easier before any wall and ceiling sheeting is done if you opt for a complete system.

How to Watch the Hounds from Work

Bobby Jo is a big fan of her dogs, four of them to be exact. She has rescued all four of them from certain death. In fact, in addition to the dogs she has adopted herself, she has saved another forty by getting other folks to adopt them. Some had as little as half an hour left before they would have met the Big Sleep.

Bobby Jo wanted a way to look in on her dogs when she was at work. Though she had solved most of their issues, occasionally she still came home to big mess. She felt if she looked in from time to time, she could see who the troublemaker was, and what started the fracas.

Since the dogs were only allowed in certain areas of the house, she opted for a four channel system wireless surveillance system. This type of surveillance system allows you to install up to 4 wireless cameras to digitally record all activity. The DVR has full networking capability and uses a GeoVision DVR card which allows Bobby Jo to view live video on the Internet. This type of video recording system is perfect for smaller areas like a home.

Finding the right surveillance system can be very frustrating from the type of security cameras you need, to how you will record the video to what cables and components will make it all work.

The most obvious benefit of purchasing a complete surveillance system is that all of the guess-work is taken out of the equation.

There are many uses for complete surveillance systems including restaurants, retail shops, child care centers, warehouses, private investigators, animal kennels, boats, your home, vacation homes, construction sites and offices.

Bobby Jo's system took only a couple of hours to install, and everything went fine.

On Monday Bobby Jo opened up her laptop and dialed in for her first look at what was going at Doggywood. They were all powernapping, and not a tail stirred. After lunch she dialed in again, and they were in the kitchen. The biggest, Bork was in the process of tipping over the trash can, and the three others were waiting anxiously for it to happen.

When Bork got the can tipped over, Brad, the smallest dog, went straight into the can. All you could see of him was his tail, which was wagging heartily. The other dogs didn't like this, and started nipping at him, trying to get him out, but he wasn't budging. Bork jumped on the can, and this did move Brad out. Then there was a big hullabaloo involving all of them.

That night Bobby Jo childproofed the lock on that cabinet door, so they couldn't get in.

They next day she looked in, and Bork was in the kitchen, and try as he might, he couldn't get that door open. Since there was no prospect of getting food, the other three weren't interested, and had retired to their quarters.

Another check found them all snoring in the afternoon.

It's what dogs do best.

Bobby Jo checks in every few hours with her hounds, even though they have no idea that she can see them. She has managed to control them very well by observing them, and then making changes that thwart some of their most unruly aspects.

But most of all, she just likes watching her babies.

If your prepared, you'll never be surprised.

Being Prepared for an Attack with Weapons of Mass Destruction

The truth is that terrorism isn't supposed to be predictable. By inflicting the maximum amount of damage to the maximum amount of people, terrorists win their game. So when we talk about being prepared for an attack with weapons of mass destruction, where can we even begin? Since predicting the attack is out of the question, what else can the everyday person do to start living a life that's prepared for what was once thought of as impossible?

Everyone Can Help

However, the attitude of the common day person should be one of being helpful not helpless. While we might not be able to interpret every word that comes from the mouths of terrorists, we can become more alert in our everyday lives, often being the heroes in spotting things that just aren't right. Being prepared isn't just about putting up physical barriers to our homes, but it's about opening out eyes to things that might be dangerous around us. For example, if you're out in a busy shopping mall and you notice a bag sitting by itself in the middle of the mall and no one is near it, you might want to contact the mall security about what you've seen. Though the chances are high that it may be nothing, it's always best to be over-careful than to ignore the possibility that it could be dangerous.

Have a Disaster Kit Handy

If the country is attacked by weapons of mass destruction, there are two likely scenarios. One scene is that your city will be destroyed or two, that you won't be hurt, but you will be out of touch with the rest of the world that is damaged. Since the likelihood of your survival is high, you need to be ready to be on your own for a few days. This means you need to have a disaster kit ready, no matter where you are. Most of us have heard that we need one of these kits in our homes, but you might want to think about having supplies in your car and at the office as well. Disaster can strike anywhere.

This kit should include enough water for at least three days, as the waters around you might be contaminated or the filtration centers may not be working. You will also want to include non-perishable foods like nuts, canned goods, etc. Things like protein bars are another good idea, plus multivitamins for any nutrients that you may not be able to provide in these foods. In this kit, you should have medical supplies like bandages and antiseptic solution, but also burn cream and pain killers. You will also want to make sure you have enough of your regular prescriptions so that you don’t run out.

If you have pets, you need to also have enough water for them as well as food and any medications they might need. You will also want to have crates for them to be put into should you need to transport them for evacuation. Be sure they have collars with their names and your contact information too in case you get separated.

Store these items in a garbage can or some other water proof container to keep it from being contaminated. You will also want to switch out the water and food every six months to be sure it's fresh.

While you might not be able to stop the weapons of mass destruction, you can make sure that you are being alert and ready for the possibility. While the government is doing everything they can to be sure we are safe, it's still up to you to make sure you and your family is taken care of.

Becoming Compliant with the National Incident Management System

Often in this new world of fears about terrorist attacks, the government creates systems of rules and regulations that most of us are unaware of. This is probably the case with the National Incident Management System. The NIMS is a very important piece of legislative work that will help to protect the country against future attacks, while also helping to deal with future attacks, should they occur. Most intelligence suggests that it's not a matter of whether or not another attack will occur, but rather when the next one will take place. Here's what you need to know.

What is the National Incident Management System?

Under the direction of the President of the United States and then created by the United States Secretary of Homeland Security, the National Incident Management System is a set of guidelines that direct users to respond to an emergency situation. This system creates clear practices in regards to emergency preparedness so that the entire country has a way to react when emergency situations occur. Instead of having separate guidelines for each city and state, this system allows for one national network of steps that should be taken so that everyone can coordinate their response efforts.

In an ideal world, this system will allow all levels of responders to work together to handle any emergent situation, no matter the size.

What are the Main Tenets of the National Incident Management System?

There are two main things to keep in mind when utilizing the National Incident Management System. First, this is a system that is standardized in order to provide one set of rules and procedures that everyone is to follow. Instead of having unique guidelines for every department of emergency responders, there is one set of guidelines. What this will do is allow different departments to work together, regardless of jurisdiction and category of assistance. There are specific requirements that are listed within this system.

The second key to the National Incident Management System is that there is also flexibility when it comes to implementing the processes in this system. Because there is no way to determine what will be necessary in the future, there must be some sort of flexibility in terms of how people will work together, regardless of their position or their abilities.

Becoming Compliant

If you are an emergency response center, you need to pick up a copy of the specific guidelines of the National Incident Management System in order to see what you need to do in a disaster situation. Many times, there are unique guidelines for different departments as determined by the roles you can play and the skills you have. If you are in a commanding position in your response center, you will want to sit down with your superiors to outline the areas where you are not fully equipped or qualified and then make plans to be sure that you are ready in those weak areas.

You will want to set up training schedules in which you apply your skills alongside other departments in your area. This will help you see what will happen if there truly is an emergency and where you could stand to improve in terms of communication and action.

Showing your compliancy will be a task that is covered by those that created the National Incident Management System. By coming out to survey your practice disaster scenarios, you can begin to show your readiness for real live disasters. When you have demonstrated that you can follow the guidelines, you will be certified as compliant. But it's what you do when it counts that truly matters.

Benefits of Defending Yourself with a Pepper Spray

Benefits of Defending Yourself with a Pepper Spray

Pepper spray Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent which is used to inflame the eyes and cause breathing difficulties, which in turn can cause a person who is attacking you to be put into a position where they are unable to cause any damage to you or your property. When a person is sprayed their eyes will literally clamp shut meaning they cannot see at all. If the person is standing, they will immediately be brought to their knees in a coughing fit and will be left with the ability to breath only small amounts of air, enough so that it is uncomfortable, but not restricted so much that it is life threatening.

Although the effects of pepper spray depend on the strength of the spray, you can generally expect to disable your attacker for around 30 minutes, which should give you an adequate amount of time to contact the police and allow them to take things from there.

You can buy pepper sprays in a variety of sizes, ranging from 0.5 ounces to 4 ounces. A size of around 2 ounces will be an adequate amount to protect yourself from a single attacker and will also fit neatly on your belt or can be put in your purse. When deciding what size to buy, you should always keep in mind that buying a smaller size could mean that it is more accessible for when the time comes that you need to use it. A larger size is generally only needed by law enforcement or professional security personnel.

Different products have different ranges and different requirements in terms of accuracy. Although you may wish to have a product that shoots the greatest distance it is usually the case that attacks occur in close proximity meaning that you do not need to have a large distance between yourself and the attacker in order to be able to defend yourself against them. There are generally 3 types of spray; each one requires different demands in terms of accuracy from the user. A steam pepper spray requires an accurate aim for the firer in order to yield optimum results, while the cone mist spray only needs to be shot roughly at the head area to achieve results. The fogger on the other hand is dispersed in such a way that only general directional accuracy is needed to ensure you subdue the attacker and you remain unharmed.

The main advantages of using a pepper spray include that it is an easy means by which to disable an attacker quickly and effectively. The fear and possible consequences of hurting someone are no longer there and you can successfully defeat a large number of attackers. They are also very easy to use, meaning that no training is needed and even if you were to miss them you still will deter them and create a wall between them and yourself allowing you to escape unharmed. The only true contender versus a pepper spray is a gun, and it is certainly much safer to use a pepper spray while also standing a better chance of stopping them than through a non fatal wound.

Hidden Cameras Are Helping Find Terrorists

Nowhere in the world are there more hidden cameras than in the British Isles. Our friends and allies started using cameras in the early 1990's as the threat of the radical Islamic nutbags increased.

The British police were able to quickly find the perpetrators of the subway bombings months back by the use of cameras, and hidden cameras are playing a substantial role role in finding the mentally short changed bombers who were hard at work trying to kill large numbers of innocent people this a few months ago in London, and at other airports in the isles.

The British police are also very smart in refusing to let the press have any of the photos for publication. According to reports, one of the men arrested has ties to the subway bombing. It gives credence to the old "Scotland Yard always get their man," or men, in this case.

Hidden cameras, or surveillance systems, can be your best friend too, and unequivocally solve the problems of burglary and theft of what is near and dear to you.

Your typical "breaking-and-entering jokester" is certainly not going to be aware that there is a camera hidden in a tissue box which can be placed just about anywhere in your house.

He can even use the tissue to wipe his fingerprints down while he is on camera. That will certainly help convict him when the time comes to face
the judge and jury.

Another advantage is that the defense attorney will have an extremely hard time questioning the camera, because the camera doesn't lie. It just takes pictures, and doesn't have to process that information like a human brain. It just does what is supposed to do.

Conviction rates where surveillance cameras are used are much higher than in cases where eye witness testimony is used. Jurors don't have much reasonable doubt when they can watch someone stealing over and over.

The cameras really make a shambles of the "evil twin" defense, because it is very clear who committed the crime. You can even burn an extra copy for the crook, just so he'll have a record of his own stupidity.

Remember, if you're prepared, you won't be surprised.

Why You Could Succumb to the Temptation Hitting Your Alarm Clock Againt the Wall

When we need to wake up in the mornings we like to use an alarm clock. These clocks are not new inventions, in fact there has always been some sort of alarm clock that people have used. Today you can find a great many types of alarm clocks. These alarm clocks range from the old fashioned to the new style clocks. As today’s lifestyles are very hectic for many of us we need to find an alarm clock that is appropriate for our lives.

For instance you can buy one of the old fashioned alarm clocks where you have to set the alarm and then wind the alarm button for it to ring. Now I am sure that many of you have heard these types of alarm clocks. These alarm clocks have a harsh sounding buzzing noise that it specifically designed to wake you from a sound sleep.

You can find other types of alarm clocks in the market today. While these come in many different shapes and forms they all have the same propose. As technology is an intricate part of our lives you will find that most of the alarm clocks feature electronic sounds. There is a talking alarm clock that will inform you of the time when you press a button. This same alarm clock however mimics the sound of a rooster when the alarm rings. Now you can make the alarm sound loud or soft depending on your morning preferences.

Regardless of the noise level, the sound of a rooster crowing is enough to jolt you out of bed and scrambling to shut the alarm off – or at the very least murder the silly alarm clock. These types of alarm clocks are very effective in getting you out of bed – of this I can absolutely assure you of since I happen to have such an alarm clock in my possession. On the other hand you may be the type of person who would like to wake up to the sounds of music.

In that case you can find many different varieties of alarm clocks that have musical settings for their alarms. These alarm clocks can be divided into two categories. One category will have a digital display panel where you can easily see the time in the morning hours. In the night time you will need to press a button to be informed of the time. In the other category you can easily see the time both during the day and the night.

I personally would love to have a musical alarm clock where I just have to look at the panel in order to find out the time. However as there are many different types of alarm clocks in stores around the world sometimes you can find the exact clock that you are looking for. At other times you may succumb to temptation and buy a Homer Simpson type of talking alarm clock.

Buying A Garden Office or Room? Here Are 10 things you need to know

I have summarised 10 essential things you need to consider when buying a garden room or home office from a UK manufacturer or supplier. Below are the vital things to consider prior to making a purchase, as obviously whenever buying a new garden office, room, building etc you want to ensure you are getting value for money and making the right purchase, for the right reasons. These tips are universal, as they apply whether you are buying a contemporary modern garden-room or an eco-friendly garden office, whatever the garden building or living space.

Here are a list of 10 keys things you need to consider:

1. Decide what function your new garden living space will be used for – and ensure that the design can meet these requirements. If it is going to be a garden office then you may require a garden room manufacturer that offers more electrics and good natural lighting options. Although I would advise not too much light if using computer screens or displays, as these can be a little sensitive to too much natural light.

If it is a gym or hot tub enclosure you want, then you will naturally require good ventilation. As a home cinema you may require excellent acoustics and sound proofing. As a granny annex or guest bedroom you would require excellent insulation, you may even wish to feature an en-suite shower or bathroom. Fortunately many garden building manufacturers offer these options. Also bear in mind whether you will need certain internal features such as cable TV, taps, toilet facilities, maybe even a bedroom. With regards to flooring consider whether you require laminate flooring, solid oak or perhaps even a carpeted finish… As you can see there is plenty to think about. Before making that purchase be 100% sure the design can match your requirements.

2. Plan the position for your new garden room carefully - if the garden room is more than 5 metres from your home and 1 metre from any boundary and does not take up more than 50% of your garden, then no planning permission is required for 95% of builds. This is provided your original home has not had any previous additional building extensions. Also bear in mind there are some restrictions in certain conservation areas and the like.

3. Planning permission may not be required for your garden building if…
1) Your Garden building will reside a maximum of 5 metres from your property.
2) Your garden building is either more than 20m from a public right of way or is nearer to the right of way than your house is.
3) If you do not live in a conservation area, an area of outstanding natural beauty or in a listed building.
4) Your garden building is for your private use only.
5) The building stands less than 4 metres high
6) Less than 50% of your total garden space is occupied by your garden building.

4. Do you want more than one floor? – As partly indicated by point 5) of the planning permission guidelines, if your building stands more than 4m high you will require planning permission, this is also the case if your building is made up of two floors or more. Luckily garden-building suppliers can work to many different specifications, so as long as you make them aware of your desire to have two or more floors, you should be good to go.

5. What size of garden room do you require - you can build a garden room of any size and provided it does not take up more than 50% of your garden area, you will not need planning permission but you will need building regulation approval if the rooms is over 30m2. However, it may be prudent to check with your local authority and the developer of any new build housing development, just to ensure there are no other quirky restrictions in your local area.

Garden rooms can even be attached to your home like a conventional extension. This would require building regulations approval but no planning permission provided your home has not had any previous building extension and that the extension size planned is within your permitted development rights. A professionally constructed garden room can even add considerable value to your home and garden rooms like The Qube come with a full 5 year or optional upgrade 10 year guarantee.

6. Do you require an open plan room or a multi room garden room – with designs now available for fully self-contained living spaces, there really are no limitations, any room combination you can think of, and you can do it. Whether they are open plan or multi room, it’s really only down to personal preference and the limitations of the garden room manufacturer you are dealing with. Open plan room games rooms for instance are proving very popular getaways, as are surround sound cinema rooms, bar areas for the dads, musical studios, it really could be the ultimate entertainment space.

7. Think about the type of design and style of your new garden living space - are you looking for a modern contemporary look or do you require the building to compliment and harmonise with the existing style of your home. This is important as you may not want the garden room, office or whatever potential use you have for it to clash with the style of your home. Fortunately there are numerous options available to you. So if you want a modern contemporary look choose a supplier that can cater for your needs, and if you want the garden building to blend in with your home, make the supplier aware of this, so you can be sure they can deliver what you request.

8. What materials will it have to be constructed with? – Are you after a timber building, wooden cladding or would you prefer a more modern, contemporary metallic material, all down to personal taste and available budget. Wooden cladding such as Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage. Whereas Cape Cod Cladding is a low maintenance wood cladding with a 15-year factory finish warranty, available in numerous colours.

9. Does it have to be eco-friendly? – If you are the sort of person that wishes their garden building to not only be functional but also eco-friendly, many garden room manufacturers are offering eco-friendly product ranges to cater for your needs. As they recognise the need to be aware of the environment at this current time, and are basing there build structures and materials on eco-friendly principles and values.

Many garden room manufacturers are now opting to use a structural insulated panel (SIP) that fuses a foam core between 2 outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB) to create a super-strong construction panel. The SIPs are used to construct the walls, floor and roof. SIPs offer several benefits to the environment, as they effectively replace conventional stud wall construction, fewer mature forest products need to be harvested. The outer OSB skins are made from “engineered wood” that is manufactured from renewable, fast growing trees. The result of this is superior insulation qualities; meaning heating and electricity bills are reduced meaning fewer fossil fuels need to be burned.

10. So where can you get a garden room like this? – There are many companies and manufacturers specialising in these types of garden rooms. Most of them focus on a niche though such as sheds, summerhouses, gazebos, modern contemporary garden offices or garden rooms. Whereas suppliers such as The Qube offer garden rooms and buildings that are versatile enough to turn into whatever you desire, not only contemporary and modern, but also eco-friendly at the same time, and should you wish can be made to blend in with your home and taken with you when you move home if you require.

How To Make Judging Of The Battery Performance An Easy Task

When you use new batteries you can expect them to work really excellently. It is possible in some batteries to test the battery performance. By testing the battery you can find out just how much power the battery you are testing has.

This is important as some products need an exceptionally charged battery for the products to work. An example of this is that of car batteries. You will need to have your car battery working in find condition if you are expecting to get anywhere. To help you see if the battery is working in top condition you can buy a tool that allows you to gauge the strength of the battery.

These tools are also excellent if you need to see if a certain battery will work with other appliances. There are other needs that you can use also. These are battery testers. These items are also good ford judging the battery performance too as they will show you in terms of numbers just how a battery works well.

You will have to do some research in order to find the best device which will show you the battery performance. When you look at these differences it should become clear which ones are better. You will also get to see what other features these tools have.

When you are thinking about buying a tool which will allow you to test the battery performance it is best if you do some shopping first. As there are many different batteries that you can look at, it is best if you have an idea about the functions you will need in a battery tester.

As with many of the products which are in the market today you will need to choose the one that will provide you with accurate information. You will need to make sure that no matter what tester you are looking into buying, you will be able to read the information which is provided about the battery performance.

While having a tester can make life easier, it is best if you have the necessary implements close at hand. This will make judging of the battery performance an easy task. Additionally with the knowledge which is given about battery performance you will know when the time arrives to replace your battery.

Burglar Repellant: Make Your Home a Hard Target

Buying a home alarm system can definitely be a wise investment, but there are other things you can do to protect your home from intruders. Dissuade criminals by making your home a hard target.

Burglars and home invaders are notorious for watching homeowners to learn their patterns. People who come and go at predictable intervals are much easier targets. If a burglar knows what time you leave the house and how long you'll likely be gone for, it reduces the chance that they'll get caught.

Try to mix up your routine a bit so your comings and goings aren't quite so predictable. If that isn't possible, it is a good idea to at least give the illusion that there are people in the home. Leaving a radio or television on while you're out makes it seem as though one or more people are inside. You can also purchase inexpensive light timers, which will turn lights on and off at predetermined times. These are particularly useful for when you will be gone for a few days.

Being close with your neighbors is one of the best ways to secure your home. If there is trust and good rapport amongst people in the area, you can keep an eye on each others' homes. If you become involved in each others' lives, you may notice if any suspicious characters are hanging around.

Have a friend stop by regularly to check on your property if you've gone out of town. You can even ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway on occasion to fool would-be thieves. It you do have a neighbor you're on good terms with, swap keys so that neither of you has to hide spare keys under the doormat, where thieves are likely to find it.

Always lock your doors and windows, and install a peephole in all exterior doors. Have good lighting around the perimeter of your home, and try not to have anything next to the house that could be used as a ladder.

Gravel driveways or paths are also a great deterrent because they make so much noise. Again, a burglar wants the easiest target possible, so discourage him from coming to your house by making it hard to sneak around.

Don't make the mistake of believing that your home won't be targeted if you don't have expensive contents inside. Burglars will take anything that they think they can sell easily. This includes DVD players, CDs, and even alcohol. Anything that can be sold or bartered is a desirable mark, especially if the thief needs money quickly.

While it's not pleasant to think about our homes being invaded and our belongings being stolen, the worst mistake a homeowner can make is to be complacent about home security. Not only are your valuables at risk, but your family as well. Don't make your house an easy target; lights, alarms, and nosy neighbors all make a burglar's job harder. Prevention is the best defense against crime, so be prepared, and stay safe.

What To Do If Your Smoke Alarm Goes Off

Everything you wanted to know about Smoke Alarms.
The majority of fires occur when you least expect them - At night.
They also spread very rapidly, but the real killer is the smoke.
Basically, your chances of survival, if you don't have a Smoke Alarm to wake you up, are zero.
This is because smoke suffocates you, and it does it fast. In fact you are far more likely to die, before the flames reach you.
Fires happen to even the most careful of people, and buying a Smoke Alarm could make the difference between life and death, or at the very least a serious injury. The quicker that you call the Fire Service, the less damage will be done to your home, and your possessions, some of which are impossible to replace, like photographs and family mementos.
Having a smoke alarm in your home, should be a natural thing that people do, like having a lock on your front door. So if you don't have smoke alarms in your property already, fit them now - before it's too late.

Most Fire Brigades up and down the UK, will either give or even install free smoke alarms in your house. Please call your local fire station for details.
FACTS
On average 270 of the people killed in fires each year didn't have a Smoke Alarm.

Half of the deaths in house fires happen between 2000 and 0800.

A quarter of all people killed in fires each year didn't have a smoke alarm.

Over the last five years, more than 70 people have been killed each year, because the smoke alarm in their property didn't work - usually because the battery was missing or flat.

WHAT IS A SMOKE ALARM?
A Smoke Alarm is a warning device, that detects smoke at the very earliest stages of a fire.
If there is a fire somewhere in your home, it will sound a piercing alarm to warn you. This gives you plenty of time to escape.

Where can i buy a smoke alarm?
Smoke alarms are available from any D.I.Y. stores, electrical shops, supermarkets, and convenience or hardware stores. They are also available for purchase on the Internet. Also remember that most brigades in the UK will give them to you for free.

How much do they cost?
For a basic, battery operated smoke alarm, you are looking at around £3.99 upwards, however there are multi feature Smoke Alarm also available, that can cost upwards of £25.
Basically, the more that it costs, the more features it will have. Some have built in emergency lights, where others will have a 10 year battery, for those that are forgetful amongst you.
It is much safer to have a basic cheap smoke alarm, than to have no alarm at all. It will still warn you early if there is a fire in your home.

EXCUSES KILL - GET A SMOKE ALARM NOW!
Do NOT put a smoke alarm in the following places.
In the kitchen or bathroom - they can be accidentally triggered by cooking fumes or steam

Where it can't be heard - for example, when you are asleep

In a garage - Exhaust fumes could cause the alarm to actuate

On a shelf or wall - Smoke rises upwards towards the ceiling. Therefore the alarm will actuate quicker if it is placed on the ceiling. Giving you more time to escape.
HOW MANY SMOKE ALARMS WILL I NEED?
The more smoke alarms that you have round your house, the safer you will be. For the minimum amount of protection, you must do the following:

If you live on just one level, make sure that you fit the alarm in the hallway, between the living and sleeping areas.

If you live in a home that has more than one level. Then ideally, you should fit one Smoke Alarm at the bottom of the stairs, and further alarms on each subsequent stair landing.
TOP TIP
The best place to put a smoke alarm is on the ceiling, as near as possible to the centre of the room, hallway or landing. It should also be at least 12" (30cm) away from any wall or light.
Smoke Alarms and their features.
There are two main types of smoke alarms available today. They are Ionisation alarms and Radiation alarms.

Ionisation Alarms

These are the cheapest and most readily available on the market. They are extremely sensitive to what we call "Flaming Fires" such as chip pan fires. They are good at catching this kind of fire early before the smoke gets too thick.

OPTICAL ALARMS

These alarms are far more expensive. They are more effective at catching "slow burning" fires, such as foam filled furniture that smoulder, or overheated electrical wiring. Optical alarms are less likely to go off accidentally, and are best for ground floor hallways and homes on one level.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR SMOKE ALARMS
Once per week, test you Smoke Alarm, by pressing the test button and holding it in until the audible alarm sounds.

Change the battery in your smoke alarm every year, unless it is an alarm that contains a 10 year battery .

Twice per year, open the case of the alarm and gently vacuum inside using the soft brush attachment, to remove dust from the sensor chamber. If your alarm doesn't open, then simply hoover over the cut out slots on the alarm casing. Never paint a smoke alarm!

As well as doing normal battery checks, it is best to replace smoke alarms with completely new units every 10 years.

YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON SMOKE ALARMS THAT WORK!

The Restaurant Staffing Strain Gets Worse

Talking with friends in the restaurant business lately always involves talk about staffing. Many of the restaurants are continually short staffed, meaning that they don't have enough employees to cover all the positions all the time.

This means that they end up paying overtime, or they take on more work themselves, at a time when they would like to do less work. It also means that there are going to be gaps in the systems when someone is taking on two or sometimes three jobs.

One owner told me about his opening cook, who now has to come in at 6AM instead of 8. He has to get the kitchen fired up, and check in all the deliveries, and do some prep work. He's a great employee, but he stretched to the limit, and has to constantly shift his priorities depending on what is happening.

Sometimes a door gets left open, sometimes he can't devote his full attention to checking things in. He has been lucky so far, but that streak won't last forever. He goes in early some days, but his shift is really the night shift, and it makes for very long days when he goes in early, and he isn't a spring chicken anymore.

This owner put in a surveillance system about a year ago, and he can watch the restaurant from home. It helps him keep an eye on things, and who is around. He doesn't worry much about his guy, but it helps him monitor others. He was able to spot a vendor not delivering all his cartons while his employee was tied up with another vendor. He has spotted the back door open when vendors left it open.

He has also spotted employees only partially doing their job, or ignoring customers while they talked to each other. “The cameras are a huge help, and many employees can't figure out why he just “knows things.”

The quality of employees is going down. Restaurant work is hard, and many people are staying away from it now, or opening small operations that can be run with only a couple people.

It would be very hard for this guy to operate without the cameras. He just can't be every place at once, but the cameras can.

If you're prepared, you'll never be surprised.

Dome Homes: A Shelter from the Storm

Weather systems across the country have become more and more extreme over the last few years. Depending on which part of the country you live in, you could be at risk for tornadoes, hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, or earthquakes. We've all seen on the news, people who live in vulnerable areas have their homes demolished by the elements, only to rebuild in the same spot, with the same type of house. Where is the logic? If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten. This same principle applies to housing options in risky areas. If you know that your traditional stick-built house didn't make it through the last hurricane, what makes you think that by simply replacing it, it will survive the next one? And remember, there will always be a next one.

One solution is to look for alternative housing construction. The best home on the market for surviving natural disasters is the monolithic dome home.

While these homes have been around since the 1960s, they have yet to catch on in mainstream real estate markets. Much of the prejudice comes from the exterior appearance of these homes. They don't have flat walls, and angled rooftops. They look futuristic and, well, strange.

Construction and design technologies have come a long way though, leading to a revolution in dome home styling. You can design a home to suit your tastes, and protect your property at the same time.

In states like Florida, where tornadoes and hurricanes tear down conventional homes without hesitation, a monolithic dome home may be the ideal structure for both private homes and school buildings.

Made of concrete and reinforced by steel, dome homes are very structurally sound. The heavy weight of these structures makes them invulnerable to being lifted off its foundation by tornadoes. In addition to the strength that comes from using steel and concrete in the construction of the home, the dome shape itself also adds to the integrity of the building. Arches are naturally strong, architecturally speaking, and practically impervious to the elements.

Because there are no flat walls on the exterior of the home, there are far fewer seams along the side of the building. The fewer the seams, the less chance there is that water will penetrate the walls. This is particularly beneficial during tropical storms, when buckets of rain are hammering down on your property.

Flooding is also something that can be prevented, or at the very least, minimized with the proper design. You can raise your living area off ground level, leaving the ground floor to be used as a garage area. When the flood waters come, they go into your garage, but leave the rest of your home untouched. Alternatively, you can design your home with the garage on the bottom level, but archways on the front and the back of the house leave your garage open on both sides. Water simply runs straight through.

Not only are monolithic dome homes ideal for residents along the Gulf Coast, but they are also good for residents living on the west coast. Dome homes are earthquake resistant, which makes them ideal structures for California and nearby states that sit along fault lines.

For Midwesterners who experience electrical storms, dome homes are also a wise choice. The shape of the rebar cage acts as a conductor, and draws the lightning straight to the ground, thereby minimizing any damage that may result from a lightning strike.

Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and lightning; dome homes can survive almost anything. They are the ideal structure for anyone living in an area where nature is unpredictable and violent. The next time you're in the market for a new home, consider investing in a dome home, and keep your family safe.

Bring Home the Dome!

The latest buzz in home building surrounds monolithic dome homes. These odd looking properties are strong enough to survive most natural disasters, including hurricanes and earthquakes, and they're also resistant to destructive bugs like termites. These homes are also extremely energy efficient. Dome homes can even be built for roughly the same cost as a traditional stick-built home. The perfect home? Quite possibly. The downside? The very uniqueness of the dome home is also its greatest weakness. Dome homes may be close to being the ideal structure, but until neighbors, buyers, and mortgage companies can accept them, they will remain on the fringe of the real estate market for years to come.

Why aren't monolithic dome homes more common? They really should be, considering the fact that they are so good for the environment in addition to being able to withstand some of the planet's most violent weather systems. Dome homes are so vastly different in appearance to traditional homes, that it can be difficult for people to see their beauty. Dome homes look like something out of a science fiction movie, which is something that most home buyers find hard to swallow.

So far, most of the people that invest in dome homes are looking for something different. They want a house that's more eco-friendly, and unique looking.

Mainstream homeowners on the other hand, want to blend in with their surroundings, to have a home that reminds them of the one they themselves grew up in. Most owners are more concerned with their day to day living, rather than carbon footprints and global warming. But, as the planet continues to feel the effects of our modern civilization, weather systems will continue to rage out of control. More hurricanes and tornadoes will continue to slam into the country, thus creating a greater need for stronger homes. By choosing a dome home, you're doing something positive for the environment, and also creating a safe haven for your family. These homes may be the best choice all around, if you can get over their distinctive looks.

Fortunately, builders and architects are creating more attractive dome home designs. There have even been dome homes built with straight walls on the exterior of the home, thereby creating a more traditional appearance. These new improvements not only help to make dome homes more palatable to home buyers, but to neighbors as well.

Why should you care what your neighbors think of your house? Because if they believe that your home's odd appearance will bring down property values of the entire neighborhood, they may be able to stop you from building your home.

Home Owners Associations are known for their strict rules regarding the size and appearance of homes in the area. Dome homes are so foreign, that it will be difficult to get a green light on your dome home project. Talk with your neighbors about your plans, and bring plenty of photos to introduce them to the wide variety of dome home designs available. Once they see the aesthetic possibilities and learn about the amazing benefits these homes have to offer, they may be more inclined to approve of your plans.

Another hurdle is with the mortgage company, building inspector, and builder. Builders need to know how to deal with a dome home's unique design and inherent challenges. Not just anyone can work with these homes. You need to hire someone who has the training and skill to work on your home.

Most home inspectors have never seen a dome home in person, and therefore have a great deal of difficulty assessing values, and finding potential problems. They simply don't know what to look for, since these homes are so different from stick-built homes.

Mortgage companies are often reluctant to offer financing for dome homes because they are so difficult to assess in terms of value. Will anyone want to buy your home when you move out? Mortgage companies aren't so sure, so they are hard-pressed to approve your home loan.

While there are challenges involved in building a dome home, it is worth it. These homes are eco-friendly, will lower your energy bills, and keep your family safe during most storms and earthquakes. The more information that people have about this revolutionary new type of home, the easier it will be to obtain financing, and up their resell values. Bring home the dome, and bring home the future.

Prepare Your Family Emergency Plan

A quick and efficient evacuation will be required by some disasters, and in cases such as fire, the difference between life and death may come down to how quickly you can evacuate. Plan and practice all evacuation and escape routes with your family members. Your evacuation route should be the quickest, safest way out, and should consider the worst-case scenarios such as power failures that will prohibit use of elevators.

It is also very important to have a backup plan in cases where the main exits are blocked. Consider all possible exit options when planning your “Plan B”. Look for windows, balconies, etc. and work out the safest plan to escape your home. Keep in mind you’re your evacuation routes should not be too complicated so as to be “children friendly.”

Mapping It Out

Having documentation is very important in every emergency plan. Mapping is a great way to document your evacuation plan and safe places.

To map your home, start by drawing the floor plan of your house. Then draw possible exits such as doors, windows, and balconies. Mark locations such as emergency bag, extinguisher, first-aid kit, and utility shut off valves. Make sure your map shows both indoor and outdoor orientation points like elevators, garage, stairs, and large furniture.

To add the evacuation routes, use a different color to illustrate at least two escape routes from each room. Keep in mind that the escape routes should end at a safe point. Mark the outdoor safe point where all family members should meet in case of an emergency that requires evacuation.

Safe Places

As previously mentioned, some disasters require a quick evacuation, however, in many cases staying indoors is much safer. A detailed emergency plan should also list a variety of safe places inside your home such as a basement, or if you don’t have a basement, a lower floor interior room with a minimum number of windows and openings.

The Dangers of Sewage Backup

The dangers of sewage backup are better understood once you learn what it is. You may also sometimes hear it referred to as raw sewage, sewage sludge, or septic tank waste.
Raw sewage is mainly black or gray water and often consists of organic waste and wastewater produced by household and industrial sources. Sewage usually contains everything from soap to solid waste, human excrement, industrial effluent, and debris, and is discharged by drains and sewer lines.

Excrement is the major source of dangerous micro-organisms like coliform, fecal coliform, Escherichia coliform, and Enterococcus.

The Health Dangers of Sewage

Being exposed to sewage or its products could result in a number of diseases:

Allergic Alveolitis
Inflammation of the alveoli in the lungs is seldom reported with relation to sewage backup. However, when reported its symptoms include fever, breathlessness, dry cough, and aching muscles and joints.

Gastroenteritis
When irritation is excessive, symptoms of gastroenteritis (an inflammation of the stomach and the intestine) can include diarrhea with vomiting and cramps, and is often associated with fever when caused by an infectious agent.

Hepatitis
Literally, Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver and caused by a virus known as viral hepatitis. When Hepatitis is an outcome of sewage backup, it is often characterized by jaundice and inflammation of the liver.

Weil's disease
An acute feverish disease with symptoms of gastroenteritis, mild jaundice, persistent and severe headache.

Occupational asthma
A respiratory disorder, occupational asthma shows symptoms of attacks of breathlessness, chest tightness, and wheezing.

Additional health dangers include fatal liver, kidney, blood damage, and skin or eye infection.

Spreading Disease

There are 3 common ways for micro-organisms to penetrate the human body. Hand-to-mouth is the most common way to spread disease and occurs during eating, drinking and smoking. Contaminated organisms could easily enter the body as we breathe aerosolized particles or contaminated dust. Skin contact with contaminated organisms occurs through cuts, scratches, or penetrating wounds, and can enter the body through the surfaces of the eyes, nose and mouth.

Don't Fence me In. (Cole Porter)

Cole Porter was not thinking of his neighbor when he composed that song, but he could have been as fences can often cause problems between two otherwise friendly neighbors.

There are many reasons why we may want to build or improve a fence. Of course privacy issues are obvious; also there is the problem of the neighbor's children or dogs over flowing into your yard. But some people really want to feel safe at home, and having a sturdy fence all around the property is a good start to security.

However, your neighbor may like to look out onto his yard, and admire the lawn which extends into your yard, giving him a lovely open outlook. Then BOOM, up goes a big, long swathe of wood cutting into his rural vision. The feeling of spaciousness is reduced by a solid screen of ugly brown fencing. He may feel the fence is a message i.e. keep to yourself.

New and/or altered fences are often shared costs in North America, so this neighborly problem can be avoided by diplomatic discussion about cost/choices etc. However, if a small fence is in place or preferred by one neighbor who does not want the expense or lack of view that will change it, a problem can develop.

In some other parts of the world, a different system may operate. In UK the fence out back to your left is your responsibility. In some Eastern European countries that had communist regimes, there was no problem. The fences were pulled down to detract from the feeling of having privacy!

Before you have a disagreement with your neighbor, check out your fencing local by-laws. There are certain rules regarding the height and (sometimes) the material of the side, front and back fences. Before any heated discussions get under way, avoid embarrassment and make sure you are within your rights!

There is such a thing as applying to your local city council/region/locality for a variance. This means you want a variation from the normal ruling. It is usually only granted for a good reason - and sometimes not even then! Beware involving the city too quickly, they may tell you to cut down your trees -or not to - and get more involved with your property than you would have wished!

Many people try and work a fence into their landscaping design to minimize the intrusion of the fence into the green look of Nature. This can be done by planting trees along the boundary line and using them as posts for wire netting. The wire is then hidden by bushes, shrubs and other foliage. Always use evergreen bushes as the background shrub, so that you do not see the fence in the winter when all else has died down.

Another form of fencing (in certain areas) that will harmonize with Nature is the cactus fence. However, this may not be considered too friendly by your neighbor! The poet Robert Frost told us that "good fences make good neighbors", but perhaps he should have added, 'only if carefully negotiated before construction!

Whatever Time The Light Goes On Is Okay

Over the years a good number of women have taken issue with my business, which is selling personal protection products.
In twenty some years I have never once advocated starting a fight, or using any products to go after anyone in an offensive way. I have always talked about using the products defensively.

Nevertheless, many women have attacked me for being a purveyor of violence, and a thug.

It stings, but it doesn't hurt. For the most part, they don't have any idea of what they are talking about. That have bought into the “Give Peace a Chance” hokem that has been around for all the years I have been standing upright. It will go on after I take my leave too.

It's a powerful theory, just like Marxism, and it is easy to believe, even though any sane person can see the obvious flaws in the fabric. But I have hope that the landscape may be changing, and there are signs that it is.

Years ago men bought 95% of all the products sold. Today it is about 60/40, and more and more women are buying every day. I would venture to say that if things continue at the same pace, by this time next year the buying ratio will be 50/50.

That's an amazing statistical change in a relatively short period of time.

Many of the emails and letters from women today are very apologetic.

Here's what I say to that:

Don't apologize…Evangelize! Don't write me to say that you're sorry you didn't get the message earlier…tell a friend, family member, or business associate how to get themselves tooled up.

The learning curve is different for everyone. It doesn't matter what you did before, or how you felt before. When you hit paydirt, enter the zone, or have an epiphany, what matters is what you do then.

We will never stop all the crime or violence. That isn't possible. Nobody can do that job. But we can save tens of thousands of people from being victimized, and the numbers bear that out in a big way.

Tell a friend. You don't have to be a big mouth, or browbeat anyone. Just tell your story. It will get the job done. You won't necessarily know when or where, but that doesn't matter.

That's just the way it works.

If you're prepared, you'll never be surprised.

The Importance of Home Alarm System

We always want our family to be safe. It is one of the most important things to us. But when we need to go to work for our family and upon leaving the house, we want to know that they are protected from harm. To be able to have a security to our houses, we should look into home alarm system. Aside from it is affordable to have a home alarm system, but it is well worth the expense when we know the benefits it gives of keeping our family and home safe.

Why do we need a home alarm system? Having a good home alarm system will lessen or definitely decrease our chances of intruders and thieves from getting into our houses. If we have a home alarm, and when intruders or thieves broke in and the alarm went off then they will probably have no time to hang around too long and so they would get less of our valuable items.

How does it work? Let us say, one of the sensors installed are triggered, then the security company will call the home owner and verify the emergency. The security company will alert the police, paramedics, or fire department to come to your property for the assistance. But if you do not respond to the call, the company will send out police to check out the situation. You can also include surveillance cameras for ultimate protection. Surveillance cameras are used for those who hire unsupervised people such as home cleaners and babysitters to ensure that they are receiving adequate services.

Will it cost a lot of money? Home alarm system is very affordable. Having a home alarm system will let us save on insurance costs as well. Some insurance companies offer a discount on the policy when decided to install an alarm system. Besides there are products of good quality that we can purchase. Try to do some research over the Internet or ask someone who have their home alarms installed in their houses. A little bit of research will yield rich rewards and set you on the path to making an informed decision. Purchasing a home alarm system does not end with having an alarm installed on the property. You will be paying a monthly fee that will provide you with 24 hour home monitoring from the company’s monitoring centers. Would you still mind the price when you know the benefits it gives you?

May we put in our minds that it is better to be safe then sorry when it comes to the safety of our family. Intruders and thieves are almost everywhere, it is just right for us to be extra careful. If you decided to purchase a home alarm system, then you will see that there really is not a single downside. Sure you and your family will enjoy the continuous 24 hour protection, be at home and protected properly and possibly saving your life. The feeling of security will give you and your family peace of mind everyday.

A New Twist On Clock Watching

Back when I was in high school I was a clock watcher, and it seemed like the minutes were rolling in slow motion, especially if it was a math class, which I did not like very much. Sometimes it seemed that the class was going to go on forever.

In those days I would never have dreamed that you could actually put a camera in a clock, and watch what happened somewhere else. In those ancient times there were no cell phones, VCR's, DVD's, remote controls, or laptops.

There were just three television networks, and nobody had dreamed up cable TV. Gasoline was about 19 cents a gallon, and car engines were big. The muscle car was king, and nobody talked about how many miles per gallon your car got.

Where I lived, the flat top haircut was still boss, and straight legged jeans with T shirts were the height of fashion.

That is now the good old daze.

The Mantle Clock Hidden Camera is definitely one of the favorites in our plant down here in Jacksonville, Florida, and we move a good number of them every month. The camera opening is so small that you would have to look for a good long time just to find it, and a lot of the time I have to point out to people just exactly where it is.

It's a good looking piece, and it can go on top of a fireplace, in a bookshelf, on a coffee table, on top of a dresser, or anywhere else you might like to put it. Wherever it goes, it can be wireless, or wired, the choice is up to you.

You can get a black and white model, or color. These days, most folks are opting for color, and high power. The high power option means that you can put the receiver just about anywhere in your home, because you'll have a range of up to 2500 feet. That makes it a perfect fit, even in a very large house.

40 plus years ago I never thought that as I watched the clock in that old high school, that someday it could be watching me, or watching my house, or office.

But if you want to protect what you've worked hard to acquire, it's the way to go.

If you're prepared, you won't be surprised,

How to Choose a Complete Camera and Video Recording System

Millions of people are using nanny cams to check on their babysitters, surveillance cameras to keep an eye on their homes and businesses and hidden cameras to catch theft, abuse and infidelity. No other method can give you the proof or evidence that a surveillance camera can.

In the past, surveillance equipment was only used by the government and private investigators. But now more and more people are finding a need for this specialized equipment.

Finding the right surveillance system can be very frustrating from the type of security cameras you need, to how you will record the video to what cables and components will make it all work.

We want your buying experience to be stress-free so we put together a selection of complete camera and video recording systems. The most obvious benefit of purchasing a complete surveillance system is that we've taken all of the guess-work out of the equation.

What can you use a complete surveillance system for?

There are many uses for complete surveillance systems including restaurants, retail shops, child care centers, warehouses, private investigators, animal kennels, boats, your home, vacation homes, construction sites and offices.

What complete surveillance system is right for you?

Hidden Camera Systems - Sometimes you can't just go in a set-up a surveillance system. These are situations where you need a hidden camera. The camera is built-in to items we use every day so that you can be as secret as possible. Whatever the camera sees is recorded directly to the DVR on board. This eliminates the chance of interference and disrupted recording.

4, 8 or 16 Channel DVR Systems - whether you have a large or small area to secure one of our DVR systems will work for you. Available in a wired or wireless version complete with cameras, a DVR and all necessary cables and components. Not only will this system digitally record vide, but if you have internet access you can see what's going on in Real-Time from anywhere in the world.

VISEC Complete Surveillance System - when you can't be on location but you need to see what's going on, the VISEC surveillance system allows you to login through the Internet and do so. VISEC installs on an existing computer and records up to four wired or wireless cameras. Having a surveillance system like this is a huge bonus to day cares, animal boarding facilities, vacation homes or for just keeping an eye on things while you're away.

Portable DVR Systems - A portable DVR system is great for situations where you are using a wireless hidden or professional camera. Just set-up the camera then the video signal will be sent from the camera to the DVR for recording.

Now a word of warning...

There are many cameras out there that use 1.2 GHz transmitters and receivers. I don't recommend buying those. The reason is 1.2 GHz frequency is not approved by the FCC for transmitting wireless video. The FCC is aware of the situation and is conducting an ongoing investigation into the production and distribution of 1.2 GHz surveillance products. Just use hidden cameras are FCC approved 2.4 GHz.

What is a Board Camera?

In the past, surveillance equipment was only used by the government and private investigators. But now more and more people are finding a need for this specialized equipment.

Millions of people are using nanny cams to check on their babysitters, surveillance cameras to keep an eye on their homes and businesses and hidden cameras to catch theft, abuse and infidelity. No other method can give you the proof or evidence that a surveillance camera can.

Board Cameras are basically a fixed lens mounted on a circuit board. These cameras are often used in mini cameras, dome cameras and for making hidden cameras but are also sold unpackaged, for mounting by the buyer.

Lenses in these cameras are either of a full opened lens or pinhole in which the opening of the lens is very small. Pinhole lens cameras are often called "spy" cameras and are most often used in making hidden cameras. All of our hidden cameras are examples of hidden board cameras.

Lenses in board cameras are pre-mounted and have a fixed iris. In most cases they have a short focal length (the distance between the surface of the lens and it's focal point) which results in a wide angle of view. Our board cameras have a lens between 3.6 and 6mm.

Because board cameras have some many fixed features they are limited to what they can be used for. However, they offer a low cost solution to security needs especially hidden camera situations.

A small board camera is built into an everyday item. The camera can be wired which means it is connected to the DVR or VCR using a cable. The camera can also be wireless, in this case the camera transmits a signal to a receiver that is connected to the DVR or VCR.

Termites and New Construction-keep pests out from day one

When you are building a house, there are several things that you want to be sure of. Of course you are looking to be sure that the plans are being followed, and that you are using as little energy and money as possible. You want to be sure that the house will be exactly what you are looking for in the end, but you also want to be sure that it is done correctly. What you might not be thinking about is something that you should be - and that is the idea of termites in your new construction. Many people believe that termites belong to older houses and older construction sites, and are therefore not important to think about. However, if you don't pay attention to termites and your new construction, you will find that you will end up being sorry in the end.

This is because the best thing that you can do to make sure you never have to worry about termites is to protect your house from the moment that you are building it. There are several ways that you can do this, and you must be sure that you do them all. First of all, you have to inspect the wood careful to make sure it is of good quality, has no termites, and is not too porous. Then, you have to be extra careful about where and how you store your wood during your construction. Finally, you have to take all of the precautions that you can to keep termites out while you are building and after you are done.

The first thing that you have to think about is the wood. You want to make sure that you are using wood that is of the best quality where there is little or no chance of termite infestation. Don't settle for cheap wood for your new construction. It might be tempting to save money by using used wood or other cheap sources. However, the amount of money that you save by this won't be worth it if you end up with a termite infestation that ruins your whole home. You want to be sure that you are giving your house every chance to stand strong for as long as you have it. Therefore, use high quality wood. Also, you should inspect you wood as you are using it. You want to be extra certain that you are only using wood that has no mites or holes where mites will be able to get in. Take the time to inspect all of your wood, and don't use pieces that look bad. Also, be sure that the wood you have chosen is not too porous. You don't want to give the termites any chance of getting into your wood.

How and where you store your wood during construction is a big factor. As you are piling wood on your site to use in your home, you should not pile it on the bare ground. You should be sure that the wood is up off of the ground in whatever way that you can. If you have to use a tarp or a raised platform, be sure that you do this. Better yet, leave the wood in the truck until you use it. You want to keep the wood as dry and safe as possible before you use it in construction. If you leave it laying on the ground unprotected, that is an entire area where termites can get in and begin to burrow.

Now, for the actual building. Believe it or not, this is a major place where termites might get in. As you are using your wood in the building you have to be sure that you are doing so on termite free areas. Check, double check, and then spray the ground for bugs before you put down a single piece of wood. You want there to be nothing alive under your house as you begin to build it. This is a very important aspect of your building. Before you even start, you should be sure that there are no infestations. If you see one, don't be content on just killing the bugs; be sure that you are spraying so that they are all destroyed. If you build your house where bugs already are, you will find them in your home later on. Also, as you are building, be extra sure to seal any cracks and to take care of any of the issues that come up with your building materials. You have to be sure that you are sealing up all of the holes so that nothing can get in later on.

Termite Treatment and Pets-what are the risks?

When you have termites, you know that you have a major problem in your home that you have to fix. You might be able to do this and you might be able to save your home. There are several treatments that you can do, and your exterminator will be able to help you decide which of these treatments is best for you. As you get ready for the treatment, you are probably thinking about removing yourself from the home, along with your family. You have been told to cover all of the food or remove it from the home, as well as anything that much allow the chemicals to seep into it, such as fabrics. However, are you thinking about your pets? Your pets are very important to you, and you must take ever precaution when it comes to termite treatment.

First of all, there are several things to remember. If you are going to leave your home during the termite treatment, you absolutely must take your pets with you. Remember that if a place is not suitable for people, it is not suitable for pets. This is an absolute fact. Remember that this should include all of your pets, the dogs and cats, as well as the small animals. You are probably already planning on taking them with you, and that is great. But there are many other things that you have to remember.

First of all, there are some treatments for termites that don't' require you to leave your home because they are not harmful to people. This, however, does not mean that they are not harmful to pets. Any time that there are chemicals sprayed in or around your home, your pet is in danger. Your pet is in more danger than you are, for several reasons.

One is that a pet is smaller than a person. This means that when a treatment consists of something that is too small to hurt a person, it might not be too small to hurt a dog or a cat or another pet. The bottom line is that animals and pets are very small and are very susceptible to poisoning. Even if you think it is safe for you to stay, remove your pet right away.

There are other reasons that you have to be extra careful with your pets and termite treatments. One is that your pets are right down there on the floor where the termites live, and therefore where they are being killed. The pets do not worry about what they eat or what they lick, or where they smell, in the same way that you would. You can tell when something is poison and when you should not eat it or drink it or smell it. A dog or cat cannot tell this and is going to be even more likely to get sick from it.

There are other things that you have to think about with your pets and termite treatments. First of all, many of the treatments take place out side your home. They might have your family, along with your pets, leave the home while the treatment is taking place. Then, you will be able to return. This might mean that it is safe inside of your home, but it might not mean that it is safe outside of your home.

When you have a pet, they are going to spend a lot of time outside of your home. Remember that foundations and exteriors of your home will have been sprayed with poisons. Often, there is much more of this that is used outside because the people don't live outside, so therefore more poison can be used. This is good for getting rid of termites, but it will be deadly for your dog. When your dog is outside of his house, he will be biting and scratching and even licking at the places where there is poison. Therefore, after a termite treatment, you need to keep your dog off of the areas that have been treated until it is safe. You should talk to the exterminators about this and see how long it will take. It might mean that you have to walk your dog across the street or not let your cat out to play for a long time. However, this will be worth it as it will keep your animals alive. Getting rid of termites is great for a house and great for the people that live there. However, it is not great for the pets. So be sure that you keep them safe so they can lead long and happy lives.

Termite Treatment-which is best for my home?

There are many things that you want to consider as you look at which of the termite treatments are going to be best for your home. First of all, you want to make sure that you are able to have the various termite treatments explained to you. The most popular treatment is usually spraying for the bugs, which will kill them. Another treatment involves replacing the areas that have been damaged and also spraying for them.

With the spraying method, you are going to have to vacate your home while your home is being sprayed. This is for your own safety, because in order to get rid of the termites there are going to have to be very harsh chemicals that are sprayed on to your home. The spraying will take place both inside and outside of your home. Therefore, you will have to leave your home and you will have to take with you any plants or animals that might be damaged by the spray.

This is the easiest and most popular option for people who have a small termite problem. This is the best option for these people to do because they will be able to get rid of their problem without having to worry about a lot of hassle. It is also usually the cheapest of the termite solutions. However, it only works if the problem has not spread very far. If the termites have eaten too much of the wood your entire home could be in danger.

The second option is for cases where that is true. If your termite problem has progressed, you might need to spray for the bugs and then replace a lot of the wood work. This could be a major undertaking that will cost you a lot of money. You might also have to replace painting and floors in order to get at the wood.

There is no easy way to tell which of the options is going to be best for you. The best thing that you can do is to have your home inspected for termites and if they are there, the people can tell you which of the options is going to be your best bet. Most of the time, you will be able to take care of the problem with sprays because the wood will not be destroyed and you can continue to live your lives. However, if the termites have weakened the home in any way, you might have to do some replacements. This is something that is not easy to do.

Your best option when it comes to what you need to do in order to take care of your problems is to get some people in there to have a look. You want to be sure that they can look at your problems and can also take a sample of the wood in your home. You want to be extra sure that anyone who is looking at your home knows exactly what you are dealing with. It is very important for you to make sure you are giving the inspectors all of the information that you have.

It is also very important that you are following through with the recommendations that you are getting about your home and your wood. If you are told that some of it should be replaced, it is a good idea for you to do so. If you don't replace it, you will find that you end up with a worse problem because the wood could collapse and you could be injured. It will also greatly lower the property value of your home.
Dealing with termites is never easy, nor is it ever something that you want to do. However, if you can take care of the problem as soon as you know there is one, you will find that it is much easier and cheaper to do it than to wait. If you wait, each day is going to mean that you have more of an expense and more and more problems when you finally get around to doing it. If you are going to take pride in your home and take care of it, you want to be sure that you are able to deal with this problem as soon as you can.

Protect Your Home From Theft

Pantry pests like to eat the same foods that humans do, and finding an infestation of pests in items such as cereals, flour, grains, baking mixes, crackers, pasta, dried fruit, spices and other dry goods is not uncommon. Often several different stages of the pests' life cycles may be present in the infestation, with adults, eggs and larvae present. The first indication of an infestation is typically the appearance of small moths in the kitchen, or the presence of beetles or larvae in dry foods.

Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth is the most common food pest that is found in the home. Meal moth larvae feed on dry goods such as cereals, flours, rice, dried fruit and vegetables, and candies and chocolate. An infestation with meal moth larvae is characterized by the appearance of silken threads that are left behind by the larvae as they eat and move through food supplies. The adult moth is small, with reddish-brown wings and a whitish-grey body.

Warehouse Beetle

The warehouse beetle feeds on cereal, cocoa, flours, nuts, dried starchy vegetables, spices, candy, and pet foods. Adult beetles are approximately one eighth of an inch long, with a dark brown oval body. Larvae are around one quarter inch long, with stiff hairs on the abdomen. Ingestion of these hairs can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive tract.

Merchant Grain Beetle and Saw-toothed Grain Beetle

Both of these beetles are around one tenth of an inch long, with tiny projections that resemble saw teeth on their thoraxes. In both the adult and larval stages, these beetles feed on grains, flours and meals, as well as cereals, nuts and dried fruit.

Red Flour Beetle and Confused Flour Beetle

In the adult stages both of these beetles are around one seventh of an inch long, with shiny reddish-brown oval bodies. They feed on cereals, grains, flours, dried fruits, herbs, and nut meats.

Drugstore Beetle and Cigarette Beetle

These species are both one eighth of an inch long in the adult stage, with light brown bodies. The cigarette beetle is more common than the drugstore beetle.

The cigarette beetle preferentially feeds on cigarettes, cigars and tobacco, but will also feed on spices and dried herbs, nuts, cereals, fruits and seeds. The drugstore beetle feeds on a very wide variety of foods, but is most commonly found in cereals, pet foods and drugs.

Weevils

Granary, rice and bean weevils are not commonly found in the home; these species tend to be found more often in warehouses and granaries. However, if infested food is brought into the home they may infest other food products. Weevils tend to be slightly larger than beetles, and have long protruding snouts. Granary and rice weevils feed most often on whole grains, while bean weevils feed on legumes such as beans and peas.

Treating and Preventing Infestations

The damage done by pantry pests is caused via contamination with pest by-products such as excrement, webbing, and hairs. Food that is contaminated should never be eaten.

Pantry pests thrive in our homes because we supply them with both food and warmth. The key to preventing infestations of pantry pests is preventing access to their food sources. However, completely eliminating an infestation may take several months, because some pests are able to survive extended periods without food.

The first step in eliminating an infestation is locating its source. If you notice moths or beetles in the kitchen, locate the source or sources and remove them from your kitchen immediately. If the infestation is small-limited to one or two food packages-controlling it is usually as simple as sealing and discarding the packages.

However, if you have several sources of infestation, control may be more difficult. All packages of dry food, including unopened ones, should be inspected carefully for the presence of larvae or adult beetles. Any packages with signs of infestation such as tiny holes or the presence of webbing should be discarded.

If the infestation is fairly widespread, it is best to remove all packages and scrub kitchen shelves with soap and water, paying special attention to cracks and crevices to remove all larvae and unhatched eggs.

Finally, practice good hygiene in the kitchen to prevent reinfestation.

* Seal all dry foods in airtight containers with well-fitting lids, such as screw-top jars or plastic containers with tight lids
* Clean shelves and other surfaces regularly
* Purchase foods in smaller packages (rather than in large bulk packages) if they are foods you do not use regularly
* Do not mix old and new supplies of foods
* Wash containers before restocking with new supplies
* Do not buy any foods contained in damaged packages
* Keep shelves dry to discourage pests
